Search Engines Marketing - Link Building

The IDEA behind the Link Wheel

In 2003 there was a big buzz around a report called “Revenge of the Mini-Net” from Michael Campbell.

This guy discovered that you can “influence” Google rankings by using a specific linking structure On Page and Off Page which will improve the PR and rankings of your main site.

Well, since then many things have changed and that report doesn’t apply anymore to today’s reality.

Google got smarter, Web2.0 sites appeared and won a huge share from the overall traffic, and competition in good niches became tougher then 5 -10 years ago.

That’s exactly where the link wheel comes in, as it combines all that into one nice strategy.

A LINK WHEEL IS………

“….a set of sites (Web2.0 in our case) linked together to give your offer A= quantitative exposure, plus B= improvement of your PR and rank by the PR juice which comes from the wheel.”

Sounds great, doesn’t it. But BEFORE you now run and build a link wheel…….

I’m not going into details about how to choose a niche and keywords. Please get details to those issues over other, specific reports/resources.

And I assume that you have your own domain and Website (the MONEY site) online with at least 3 pages (index plus 2 other pages with valuable copy) plus the privacy, disclaimer, about, contact and sitemap page.

If NOT, then you have 2 options……..

Make a free site at Weebly.com (they just improved their features)

or………

Start to build YOUR business and get hosting from Hostgator and, if you need, get a .com, .org or .net domain over at Namecheap.

Those options would be your MONEY SITE, where you monetize your traffic. Get visitors on your mailing list, offer solutions as affiliate, or offer your own products, CPA offers etc.

The Link Wheel on the other hand is build to get you traffic and to improve the rank of that MONEY SITE. You don’t use the Web2.0 sites in the wheel to make sales, so no affiliate links here.

SET MINIMUM GOALS

I recommend that you set goals to make the most out of your work. After all, you are here to build a business and therefore having a plan and set some goals can’t be a bad idea ;-)

Set goals like...

Improve my rank from number ? to number  ? Increase traffic from xx visitors/day to xx visitors/day Increase opt in conversion to x% Etc……………you name it

What Do You Need To Start

The only thing you need to start a link wheel is CONTENT (Articles) and the mentioned pages at your money site to link to.

But like anything in IM, building a link wheel is not an exact science. Feel free to build the link wheel the way it suits you. Some use this to boost a Web2.0 site such as a Hubpage or an EA article instead of their own money site – no problem, it’s your choice. Others use their OWN domains/pages to be part of the wheel itself – again, no problem.

Please be aware that the link wheel is only a PART of your backlink strategy and should not be your sole effort to get backlinks to your site.

Something else, I personally recommend using high quality backlinks such as from Ezine Articles to link directly to your own sites and not to a third party site like a Squidoo lens or a Hubpage. It’s just a waste of PR IMO.

My Ezine Article links point always to my own sites and never to 3°party sites like in a link wheel, only Web2.0 sites. But that’s me.

MAXIMISE YOUR CONTENT

10 Unique articles = 40 web properties and 58 backlinks

There are people who write 10 articles, submit them to EA and hope for a flood of traffic. What a waste of time and human resources J

With 10 unique articles you get 10 spots at EA with 2 links to your own site from each article. Then you get 10 unique pages at your own site (same articles) linking to the prior article in your site and to your own homepage (+19 inlinks) and then you get at least 20 Web2.0 properties inside the link wheel for another 19 backlinks.

Why not 60 backlinks?...............

……… you’ll find out soon.
